Tell us a little about yourself and your background.

I’m 22 year old and I go by Charly Noon also known as “Crack” from Oxford, NC (EXIT 204). I have been making music for 4 years now. I attended North Carolina Central University and competed one year before deciding to enlist in the US Navy. During my time in the Navy I made some friends who later became a team which we named “Bad News”. We decided that our individual talents could come together to make something greater than ourselves and we collaborated on a few songs.

Who was some of your musical influences coming up?
As a kid, I listened to music by DMX, Nelly, Ludacris, Gucci Mane, Lil Wayne, and Jay Z. By the time I actually started making music the individuals influencing my music were J Cole, Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky, Curren$y, Nipsey Hussle, and Dom Kennedy.
I also watched a lot of freestyle battles coming up and I feel like that’s what gave me the aggressive “get at em” attitude in my music.
How would you describe your style of music? How has it changed over time?
When I first started making music I feel like everything I was saying was just ignorance. Nothing I was saying really had any meaning behind it.
Now I feel like I can paint pictures for people with my music.
Describe what your process is like for making music? Do you have any rituals or specific routine?
Sometimes I hear a beat that I like and I can write as many verses that I like to it. Other times I may just write accapella and find a beat that I like later. When I smoke weed my mind can’t stop coming with dope ideas. Music is just better when you’re high.
Who are some artist that have inspired you and why?
J Cole of course. He made it to the big stage from the same state I’m from. But my main influences are Wiz Khalifa, A$AP Rocky and Curren$y. Wiz Khalifa and Curren$y make smooth stoner music and I like to consider myself a “Young OG” (even before Fabolous) so I can relate to everything they talk about. A$AP is kind of the same way but he is a little bit more street. I never had to live in the hood or sell drugs or anything, but that’s where I kicked it on a daily basis. I saw everything that went on in that environment daily.
How would you describe your studio vibes?
My studio vibes are usually chill, I don’t recording around a lot of people. I prefer it to be just me and the engineer and maybe one homie in the studio.
Which song of yours is your favorite and why?
My favorite song of mine would be “Young OG prod. by Distant”. The main reason is because “Distant” is a good friend of mine and that’s the 1st time I used a beat from someone that I actually knew that wasn’t “BadNews.” I recorded the song in San Diego, California so the whole vibe was dope during the time. It was the 1st time I had been in a legit recording studio with a legit engineer. Also I just love the song because I feel like it gives off the perfect vibe. I feel like people know when they hear the beat and the lyrics they can tell that’s a smooth youngin.
What are your thoughts on the current state of hip=hop music today?
Me personally, I feel like everything that’s considered to be hip-hop today shouldn’t be.
I respect everybody’s grind and craft because we’re all artist, but a lot of music today shouldn’t be considered Rap/ Hip-Hop. We need to make another genre of music for some of these so called rappers today.
What’s the hardest challenge of being an artist in today’s era?
The hardest challenge today in music is staying true to yourself, and making the music that you want to make.
Everyone wants to hear 100 lies about bricks and how they plug is from another country. You have artist that will give in and start making music that they feel like will get them on faster. That’s why I feel like keeping it real and making the music you want to make is the hardest challenge.
What music are you listening to these days? Any artist that you think is SuperDope?
I listen to a lot of Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y, and A$AP Rocky, Fat Trel, and Dave East.
Dave East is SuperDope. The only artist I even entertain that was on the XXL Freshman Cover.
What are you three favorite Hip Hop Songs at the moment?
I’m bumping that Wiz Khalifa ft. Lil Uzi Vert – Pull Up right now and Curren$y’s recent tape, Stoned on Ocean. I’m also listening to Dave East – Money.
If you could work with any artist you wanted, who would be your dream collaboration?
Charly Noon & Wiz Khalifa
What has been one of your biggest moments so far in your music career?
Performing in Tokyo, Japan. And after the performance any time I went back to the club they would be playing my music.
What can people expect next from you?
Working on a project right now I plan to drop before the end of the year. In the meantime I’ll drop a couple freestyles here and there.
What was your first song you ever made, and at what age?
The first song that I ever made was a freestyle to Soulja Boy’s  “Shoot First Ask Later” beat. I would never let anybody hear that today. I was 18 at the time.
How do you come up with most of your lyrics to your songs?
I just sit and think about everything I’ve ever done and things that I plan on doing. It depends on the beat too. Some beats call for different subjects.
I also just get into that mindset that I’m the coolest youngin alive and nobody does it like me.
